Voters Trust Democrats With Their Money?
One line has stayed with me from all the election commentary I heard, so before we move on from the presidential election here, too, on the blog—I'm sharing it. Responding to polls signifying that a noticeably higher percentage of voters in upscale suburbs—particularly noted was the Philadelphia area—voted Democratic this year, one analyst announced, "Apparently, upscale voters now feel they can trust the Democrats with their money."
That's one interpretation, but I can't help wondering repeatedly if it is an accurate one.
When Americans voted for Barack Obama, do we think it was because they were thinking about their money? I know this commentator was inferring that Americans vote Republican when they want to safeguard their money. But for me, her remark also raised the specter of the ugly, selfish American.
How about the possibility that despite the economic crisis, Americans who know they can tighten their belts and weather a financial storm looked beyond their money when they voted? How about the possibility that this field of American voters had other priorities, too, like, maybe, hold on to your hats—Peace? Diplomacy? Safeguarding our planet? Health care?
Is that so far-fetched?
I don't think so.
